What to wear to your maternity session

All photos and styling by Jennifer Gray Calcagno Photography

Dressing for your maternity session can be a challenge when you don't fit into any of your clothing, your belly is still growing, and you aren't sure what size you will be by the time you have photos done.

I aim to take that stress away by offering my clients (in the NOVA region) a closet full of beautiful options to borrow for their shoot. Each of the items in the Client Closet was hand-selected by me, so you can be sure it's something that will look good in photos, and the best part is, it's completely free to borrow my clothing. Not to mention you will be helping the environment by borrowing something from my sustainable client closet.

I'm passionate about reducing the fast fashion waste that is destroying our beautiful planet, and I hope you are too. However, if you prefer to buy something new, you can still help by donating your item to the Client Closet after our shoot and receiving a discount on a future shoot with me. It's a win-win for YOU, me, and the planet!

Now let's take a look at just a few options from the client closet...

I'll begin with some more formal looks and end with casual options.

If you are looking for a more formal look, this navy blue maternity wrap dress will bring a bit of drama to your shoot with bubble sleeves and a high slit.

Or this dark green off-the-shoulder maxi will also give you that more formal look with a touch of drama in the photos. I love how soft it can look, and green on green is one of my favorite looks right now. (I have this green dress in a size large, it is not maternity.)

This all-lace pink maternity gown has a train if you really want some drama in your photos, and maybe you are having a girl!

For something a bit more casual, this cottage-core-inspired sage green dress checks all the boxes. This dress is not a maternity dress, but it looks great as one, and I also have it in a similar style in white, pictured below.

If you want to document your bear belly, then this (also not maternity) nude fringe sleeve wrap dress is a great option for your shoot. You will need nude undergarments for this fringe mini dress.

This all-lace white maternity gown with a train is another option to show your baby bump with, but keep in mind this one is completely open in the front and see-through, so this is only good for those profile shots or close-ups of the baby bump. You'll want to have petty white undergarments on that you are comfortable in for photos.

Are you looking for something playful and completely out of the box? Then this baby blue short dress will certainly do it. There's also something so nostalgic about wearing a loose, short dress, it has that 70s/80s vibe when our mothers used to wear baggy clothing while pregnant, and the dresses would hang from the belly like an oversized tee! I just adore this look!

We styled it with cowgirl boots and a sun hat, but I also think it would be really cute with chunky mary jane style low heels to play on that baby girl look. This dress has a built-in nude lining.

I have many more style options, and when you book a session with me, I will be happy to help you find the perfect look for your photoshoot. Can't wait to hear from you.

These maternity photos were taken outside of Washinton, DC, in the Northern Virginia Hunt Country region. All photos belong to Jennifer Gray Calcagno Photography.
